The most common question we get is what a septic system costs. It's a fair question, and the honest answer is that it depends on several things about your specific property. A number pulled off a website tells you almost nothing about your project, because two systems on two lots down the road from each other can cost very different amounts for good reasons.

Rather than quote a misleading figure, it's more useful to understand what actually moves the price. Once you know the variables, a real quote makes a lot more sense.

What drives the cost of a septic system

• System type: a conventional system, a raised bed and an advanced/tertiary treatment system are different builds at different price points.
• Daily design flow: a larger home or a commercial building needs a larger, more capable system.
• Soil and site conditions: difficult soils, high water tables or tight lots change what the site can support and how much work is involved.
• Excavation and material: the amount of digging, imported septic sand, stone and fill all add up.
• Distance and access: how far material has to be trucked and how easy the site is to work.
• Whether pump-assisted distribution is needed: a pump chamber and controls add components.
